Twelve months has passed since Michael Bavin passed away, and I thought I might add a few things, being a colleague when he worked in Lagos. Michael was born in Lake District and so he was a northcountryman like myself, though he left England for Canada when he was seven years old. He worked as a teacher in Kumasi around 1963/4 when Kwame Nkrumah was in power, and returned there in December 2015, finding his old house and the Wesley College where he taught (and where his father was Principal). He served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Vietnam War era and I believe he started his teaching career in 1978. He studied English Literature and Philosophy at university, and he admired, above all, Albert Camus and Absurdist philosophy. Like, I feel, any perspicacious soul, he realized that the myth of Sisyphus was "real" - he inter-weaved freethinking doubt with the mystical, or otherworldly. I think it was Camus who said we should imagine a universe where God, Salvation and metaphysics exist. Michael was not just witty, erudite and thoughtful; he was also a master of the 'bon mot' and encouraged people to write. Suffice to say, he will be missed by many, and as William Morris said, we are merely the trustees for those who follow us; nothing more, nothing less. Michael knew that, and he has left us with many good memories - and importantly, many sound words of advice. I was unaware of this memorial site for Michael: my condolences to all his family members.

Thank you so much for this . I knew him at my first job as a teacher. He was the principal. Now I know where all that stories about literature he told me came from. He was so so kind to me .Thank you for sharing

Oh Mr Bavin . I always wondered all these years why I never heard from you. How I had no idea and I am so sorry. You are always in my heart . I tried reaching you when I got married and even when I had my son. You were so so kind to me at Caleb . Now reading all the emails we exchanged all those years brings new meaning. Rest in peace. I will always cherish the few months I knew you .

Michael was a friend since the 1970s. We last saw him when he visited us for five months in Canada in 2014 / 2015. He spoke with much fondness and love about his students and colleagues in Nigeria. We will miss his sense of humour, wit, and compassion.

I'm so sorry to hear of Michael's passing. I've been trying to get in touch with his family but I have no idea where to start looking. I was an elementary school friend of Michael's and would dearly love to connect with his family.

Shocked to hear of Michael's passing. We worked together in Pakistan in the early days of TNS in Lahore, though it was a brief engagement. My sincere condolences to Michael's family and friends...

I certainly do miss collecting house point for your class room, to think you walked into my DT lesson a few day before your pass; Mr B I was never actually your class student but I do remember how kind and funny you were to everyone. My heart goes out to your family and loved ones who suffered this pain of letting you go. I send my condolences to your family and I hope you are happy in heaven; always remember me Mr B!! May your soul rest in perfect peace and I hope your family is alright and I am extremely sorry to see you go and extremely sad.
Love,
An unknown person but i'm sure you were with me while I was typing this

Dear Mr. B,
May your soul rest in perfect peace. I hope whatever happened that caused the death will not happen to anybody that you know and love. We will always remember you, for you are not gone. You are still in the depths of our hearts. I will miss you kind smile and your caring, funny comments. You can never be replaced in the classroom. Even if a substitute comes in, you will always be the year 5 teacher. Greetings to your family. I hope they are okay! You will always be our 5C teacher and the second Mr. Mark!
